We take great pride in delivering high quality water and maintaining our sanitary and storm sewer systems. A consistent record of non-violation testing and dependable water quality has earned us notice. Our water system was named "Water System of the Year" by the Michigan Rural Water Association at its 2003 annual conference. The association has also named our very own Doug Hartger, Water Supervisor, as Michigan Water Operator of the Year for 2003!

Drinking Water

Our municipally owned and operated water supply system obtains its water from eight deep wells with a combined capacity of seven million gallons per day. Major improvements in 1993 allow us to serve the total water needs of the Gerber Products Company production facility as well as the growing needs of additional industrial and commercial customers. Our water rates are the lowest in west Michigan and well below the State median.

Storm Sewer

The urbanized area of our community has an extensive stormwater collection system. This network of pipes collects stormwater from both public right-of-ways and private properties. We are beginning to use retention and detention ponds to slow the flow of stormwater during peak rain events. This allows the sediment and other contaminants to settle out before entering area streams and lakes, thus preserving local water quality.

Wastewater Treatment

Our municipally owned sanitary sewer system collects and treats approximately 700,000 gallons per day. Sewage is pumped to the Wastewater Treatment Facility located on 72nd Street south of town. The facility uses three lagoons totaling 80 acres for storage and treatment. The resulting effluent is then used to irrigate City-owned agricultural fields, with the treated wastewater eventually entering the groundwater system. Our sewer rates compare favorably with those of other west Michigan communities.
