Indoor Firing Range/Training Facility
Our indoor state-of-the-art firing range/training facility, located at the city municipal building, offers specialized training and practical application to our officers. We are proud of this facility and the benefits it offers.
Building Facts
The general contractor for the indoor training facility was Rangetech, Inc, out of Chicago. They have been designing and manufacturing firearms training equipment since 1992.
The ventilation system is state-of-the-art. Air is moved through the range proper at approximately 70 feet per minute. The airflow is directed out from a patented radial diffuser, which provides the best floor to ceiling coverage. Because air is so evenly directed, even at 70 feet per minute the air movement is almost undetectable. When operating, the ventilation system maintains a 10% negative air pressure inside the range. This means that 10% more air is being exhausted from the interior than is being introduced. This negative air pressure facilitates the appropriate movement of air. The system also utilizes an interactive “.wav file” system. This feature allows the user to install verbal commands or background noises (sirens, people screaming, gunshots, etc) similar to those they might encounter on the street. These .wav files are completely programmable and can be utilized without any exercise. Additionally, the department has installed an old red & blue overhead lightbar inside the range, which can provide the same type of lighting effect a patrol officer would experience on the street.
Unlike the backstop in most indoor ranges, which are ordinarily constructed of beveled steel to expend the kinetic energy of a fired bullet, this backstop system utilizes a granulated rubber backstop. The sidewalls to approximately 15,000 tires were cut up into small pieces, treated with calcium carbonate and laid on an inclined steel bedplate. This “blanket” of granulated rubber is about 4 feet thick from top to bottom. It can stop up to a 50-caliber bullet. To ensure a minimal chance of lead exposure, the department requires that all department qualifications utilize complete metal-jacketed bullets and no-lead primers, which, when fired into a rubber backstop, eliminates virtually all lead airborne particles.

Tactical Training
To consistently ensure a safe environment in our community, our officers are trained in contemporary tactical alternatives, which provide practical alternatives to potentially dangerous situations.
Instructor/Administrator
Sergeant Randy Wright is the primary Firearms Instructor for the Fremont Police Department and is the Assistant Team Leader of the Newaygo County Emergency Response Team. Sgt. Wright is a Small Arms Instructor, Machine Gun Instructor, Specialty Impact Munitions Instructor, OC Aerosol Instructor and Distraction Device Instructor, as well as WMTOA sniper certified. Sgt. Wright is a highly valued and greatly respected officer. He is dedicated not only to his work, but also to the safety of our community. Sgt. Wright is supervised by Police Chief Phil Deur and supervises police officers as assigned.
Basic SWAT
This course is designed to provide our officers with the knowledge and skills needed to resolve violent situations with the least loss of life. This is a weeklong course taught by instructors with extensive tactical background that includes both military and law enforcement experience. Officers will earn a certificate upon completion. SWAT is an ever-changing science that requires regular review to remain efficient.
12 Gauge Specialty Impact Munitions
The objective of this course is to provide our officers with the skill and knowledge to successfully end a situation with little or no injury through the deployment of a kinetic energy impact device. For example, bean bags are an alternative to fire for our officers when facing a potentially lethal confrontation. Officers are certified to deploy this device upon completion of training.
OC Aerosol
The purpose of this course is to provide our officers with the skills and knowledge to appropriately employ Oleoresin Capsicum (OC). This will enable officers to provide a high degree of safety for themselves and those they protect. This course also teaches proper procedures to use when personally contaminated with a chemical spray, along with procedures for the proper treatment of contaminated subjects. Upon completion, officers will be certified to deploy an OC spray.
Rapid Response to Active Shooters
This is a relatively new training concept employing a rapid, tactical response. Officers are taught the philosophies and tactics used to respond to incidents with ongoing loss of life or injury. This course is designed to give officers the mental and tactical edge when dealing with an active shooter.
Distraction Device
This is a comprehensive, one-day course that provides officers with the knowledge and ability to deploy a sound/light distraction device. Officers are taught exactly how the device works along with a basic understanding of explosives and how to deploy them safely and strategically. Officers will be certified upon completion of the course.
Machine Gun Operator
This is a three-day comprehensive course that educates operators about machine gun nomenclature and operation. This course covers both the H&K and Colt machine gun systems. Officers will be able to utilize these systems to maximize safety and performance. Officers will receive certification upon successful completion.
Tactical Handgun
This is a course offered to our officers to enhance their handgun procedures. This course offers close quarters battle (CQB) tactics, retention techniques, handgun countermeasures and move and shoot techniques. This course will also prepare officers mentally for any CQB confrontation. This course is offered once annually, and those who complete the course will receive a certificate.
