"Creating Positive Change and Choices through Opportunity"

Community Policing is a concept of law enforcement and the community working together towards crime prevention. It addresses the issues facing our community, issues that the public and law enforcement feel are important to keeping justice and safety among citizens and businesses. The cooperation, involvement and most importantly, input from citizens, is greatly appreciated and needed for the whole community to create solutions and preventive measures in dealing with crime and safety.

Goals:

  • To create and implement drug, alcohol, violence and safety programs in all the schools within the Fremont School District.
  • To maintain public order, safety, health and enforcement of laws and ordinances.
  • To detect specific areas of crime and work towards solutions to prevent/deter said crimes.
  • To encourage and support citizen and business involvement in crime prevention and safety issues.
  • To develop a positive relationship with the citizens and youth of the City of Fremont, re-enforcing the concept that the Police Department is here to serve and protect the citizens and youth by helping in situations of need.
  • To ensure safety within our schools and provide a positive and rewarding learning experience amongst the students. Keep our schools crime and violence free.

Mission Statement:

To provide character and leadership to our community, to prevent and deter criminal behavior, to promote a safe, healthy and caring environment and to develop community relations and awareness towards local issues.

Program Services:

Our Youth/School Resource Officer provides police, prevention and safety services to each of the public and private schools within the community.

Drug Prevention Curriculum

For grades K-8, an officer spends time in each classroom at local schools providing a drug and safety curriculum with a clear and positive "no use" message.

Business Watch

Business Watch is a countywide program designed to assist and work with businesses on safety and security issues. It offers "night eyes" business checks and also creates a communication network between businesses and police to help prevent and deter crimes within each business. Feel free to fill out a Business Watch Contact Card online. Special presentations are offered to businesses for management and employees in specific crime areas:

  • Bad check recognition and policies
  • Security and business layout
  • Workplace violence prevention
  • Alarm procedures and policy
  • CityWatch communication services

Spotlight

Spotlight is a cooperative effort between retailers and law enforcement. This is an effective, turnkey program that has been activated in our community to combat underage tobacco and alcohol purchases. Our officers work with retailers to implement this very successful program. When a store is selected, the store will be staffed (either inside or out) with undercover police officers. The officers will be there to assist clerks in deterring underage purchase attempts. Also, adults purchasing for minors and false ID’s have become a problem countywide. All violators will be prosecuted. A retailer’s business that sells alcohol or tobacco to minors can be fined up to $1000, as will the clerk who made the sale.

Diversion Programs/Community Service Work

The Newaygo County Prosecutor’s Office refers certain cases of Minor in Possession (MIP), tobacco, drug and certain retail fraud offenses to diversion programs within the Youth Services Office (YSO) of the Sheriff’s Department, based on suspect cooperation (with police and program), age and criminal history. The YSO then provides the curriculum and contracts to program attendees to promote awareness towards their offense. The attendee goes through steps in helping them face their problem and working towards preventing future use. Upon successful completion of the program, the criminal offense is expunged from their record.

Community Relations and Awareness

The Fremont Police Department sponsors community events and promotions to assist in the safety and crime prevention services within the City of Fremont. Click-it-or-Ticket and Operation ABC, promote seatbelt use amongst parents and children through highly visible patrol and stops, with unrestrained drivers being ticketed for violations within their vehicle. Safe and Sober Patrol provides an aggressive approach towards drunk driving at the high times (holidays) of the year. Underage drinking enforcement programs are used during prom, graduation and summer times to combat underage parties. All these programs and more are used to keep the community safe from the dangers that lie ahead from substance use/abuse and unrestrained passengers in vehicles. With community acceptance and cooperation, these programs will help limit family problems such as domestic violence, physical assaults, injuries and deaths related to traffic crashes, and substance abuse. Sometimes the fines and costs are a small price to pay for the life of a loved one.

If you have any questions about our program or services, please contact Officer Matt Hendrie.
